Integrity in Research

The Ministry of Higher Education and Science seeks to maintain the high quality of Danish research by focusing on strengthening and further developing the integrity and credibility of the research conducted in Denmark.

The Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, which is updated in 2025, provides the research community with a framework for promoting shared principles and standards and supports a common understanding and culture of research integrity in Denmark.

Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity

The Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity is based on four fundamental principles of research integrity:

  • Honesty
  • Transparency
  • Accountability
  • Respect

The Code presents a set of generally accepted standards for responsible research practice, organised into seven thematic areas, a set of guidelines for teaching, training, and supervision, as well as a set of guidelines on how to handle questionable research practices. Taken together, these elements are intended to guide researchers in their daily work.

In addition, the Code provides a common foundation that institutions can use to further develop policies and procedures that promote research integrity across all fields of research.

The Committee Behind the Update of the Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity

A broadly composed committee with representatives from the research landscape has updated the original Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity from 2014. The update was carried out in response to developments in national and international research collaboration, Open Science, academic freedom, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Responsible research data management based on the FAIR principles

Responsible handling of research data is a central element of good research practice and is built on the FAIR principles, which from 2026 is included in the Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. The aim is to ensure trustworthy, transparent, and reusable research throughout the entire data and research process. The Danish e‑Infrastructure Cooperation (DeiC) supports this work by providing national tools, services, and competencies that help researchers and institutions implement FAIR data management in practice.
