What does Brexit mean for professional recognition?

EU rules on recognition no longer apply when British nationals apply for authorisation in Denmark, or when Danish nationals apply for authorisation in the UK.

The UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) has left the EU and, since 1 January 2021, has no longer been subject to EU rules. This also applies to the Professional Recognition Directive (Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications).

Consequently, you no longer have EU rights if, as a Danish or UK professional, you wish to obtain authorisation or similar approval to work in the other country.

Authorisation in the United Kingdom

If you wish to apply for authorisation in the UK

You must apply to the relevant UK authority for authorisation, and your application will be processed in accordance with the UK rules applicable to the profession in question.

If you obtained authorisation in the UK before Brexit

The withdrawal agreement between the EU and the UK ensures that Danish and other EU citizens who were resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 and have previously had their qualifications recognised are not affected by Brexit as regards their authorisation to practise their profession in the UK.

Autorisation i Danmark

If you wish to apply for authorisation in Denmark

If you are a British citizen, your application for registration will be processed in accordance with the rules for third-country nationals, i.e. the Danish legislation applicable to the profession in question.

If you are a national of an EU or EEA country and qualified to practise a regulated profession in the UK before 1 January 2021, your application will be processed under the Recognition Directive.

If you were authorised in Denmark before Brexit

If you are a British citizen and had your regulated professional qualifications recognised in Denmark before the end of 2020, the recognition remains valid.
