Measurement of Open Access - Denmark's Open Access Indicator

The Open Access Indicator shows the extent to which researchers from Danish universities make their research publications freely and openly accessible to the public via the internet. The indicator is updated annually with new data on publications involving university researchers in Denmark.

Three categories of Open Access

The indicator divides the research publications into the following three status categories:

1. Realized Open Access 
   This category refers to scientific publications that can be freely read and downloaded from the internet without any form of prior payment, subscription, or user registration.
   
   
2. Unused Open Access 
   This category refers to publications that cannot be accessed freely on the internet one year after their date of publication, but which are published in journals that allow Open Access.
   
   
3. Blocked Open Access 
   This category refers to publications that cannot be accessed freely on the internet one year after their year of publication, and which are published in journals that, due to the publisher's policy, are blocked from achieving Open Access.

Measurements from the Open Access Indicator cover publication activity for an entire calendar year, and data is therefore published annually on the Open Access Indicator website. Here, it is also possible to download the underlying data on which the indicator's measurement is based, as well as additional datasets and documentation.
