Open Access Monitoring – the Danish Open Access Indicator

The Open Access Indicator monitors and assesses the online availability of research publications produced at Danish Universities. It thereby measures the proportion of research publications in Denmark that are available through Open Access.

The Open Access Indicator shows the extent to which researchers at Danish universities make their research publications freely available to the public via the internet. The Indicator is updated annually with new publication data relating to researchers at Danish universities.

Three Open Access Categories

The Indicator classifies research publications into the following three Open Access status categories:

  1. Realised Open Access
This category refers to research publications that can be freely read and downloaded online without any prior payment, subscription or user registration.

  2. Unused Open Access
This category refers to publications that are not freely accessible online one year after their publication date, but that have been published in journals that permit Open Access.

  3. Blocked Open Access
This category refers to publications that are not freely accessible online one year after their publication year and that have been published in journals where Open Access is blocked due to the publisher’s policy.

The Open Access Indicator covers publication output for an entire calendar year. The data are therefore published annually on the Open Access Indicator website. The website also provides access to the underlying data used for the Indicator, as well as additional datasets and documentation
