The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an EU initiative that provides a common digital infrastructure for sharing and reusing research data and digital resources across disciplines and national borders. The initiative addresses the challenge of fragmented research data and supports interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in areas including health, climate and technology.
EOSC is based on the FAIR Principles, ensuring that data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.
EOSC supports the EU’s strategies for both research infrastructures and AI in Science. The initiative contributes to the EU’s objective of strengthening global competitiveness by enhancing opportunities for researchers and businesses to innovate, and to digital sovereignty by reducing dependence on non-European cloud solutions. EOSC is being developed as a federation of national and thematic nodes, connecting data and services within a common European research environment, the European Research Area (ERA).
The aim is for EOSC to contribute to a “Web of FAIR Data” for research in Europe, upon which a broad range of value-added services can be built.
The first so-called node in the EOSC Federation – the EU Node – was launched in October 2024. This first central node provides researchers with access to data, tools and services from research infrastructures and other scientific service providers across Europe. At the same time, the node is intended to facilitate close integration with other nodes, including national and thematic nodes made available by EU Member States and other participating countries.
EOSC is being developed through a tripartite collaboration between the European Commission, the participating Member States and Associated Countries, and the users – i.e. the research community. The purpose is to ensure dialogue and a common strategic direction for the development and implementation of EOSC, as well as coordination of national and European initiatives in the field of Open Science.
The Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science represents Denmark on the EOSC Steering Board (EOSC SB), an expert group that advises the European Commission. Researchers from the different countries are represented in the EOSC Association (EOSC-A), while DeiC (Danish e-Infrastructure Consortium) represents the Danish universities in the EOSC Association.
Together with the European Commission, the EOSC Steering Board and EOSC Association contribute to the ongoing development of EOSC and help ensure that the initiative addresses the needs of the European research and innovation system.
