The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an EU initiative that creates a shared digital infrastructure for sharing and reusing research data and digital resources across disciplines and countries. The initiative addresses the challenge of fragmented research data and supports interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation within fields such as health, climate, and technology.
EOSC follows the FAIR principles, which ensure that data are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
EOSC supports the EU's strategies for both research infrastructure and AI in Science. The initiative contributes to the EU's goal of global competitiveness by strengthening the opportunities for innovation among researchers and companies, and to digital sovereignty by reducing dependency on non-European cloud solutions. EOSC is developed as a federation of national and thematic nodes, where data and services are linked within a European Research Area (ERA).
The goal is for EOSC to contribute to a "web of FAIR data" for research in Europe, upon which a wide range of services that create value can be built.
The first so-called node – EU Node – in the EOSC federation was launched in October 2024. This initial central node provides researchers with access to data, tools, and services from research infrastructures and other scientific service providers across Europe. Simultaneously, the node is designed to support a close interconnection with other nodes – for example, national and thematic nodes provided by EU member states and others.
EOSC is developed through a tripartite collaboration between the European Commission, the participating member and associated countries, and the users – i.e., the research community. The purpose is to ensure dialogue on and a shared strategic direction for the development and implementation of EOSC, as well as the coordination of national and European initiatives within Open Science.
The Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science represents Denmark on the EOSC Steering Board (EOSC SB), which is an expert group that advises the European Commission. Researchers in the various countries are represented in the EOSC Association (EOSC A), and DeiC (Danish e-infrastructure Consortium) represents the Danish universities in EOSC A.
Together with the European Commission, the EOSC SB and EOSC A contribute to the ongoing development of EOSC and to ensuring that the initiative supports the needs of the European research and innovation system
